Taiwan Aug Leading Indicators Up 0.4% On Month Vs Jul Up 0.2%

TAIPEI (Dow Jones)--Taiwan's composite index of leading economic indicators rose 0.4% in August from the previous month, after a revised 0.2% rise in July, the government said Thursday. The Council for Economic Planning and Development said the increase in the index was the result of positive readings in three of the seven components of the index: export orders, average monthly overtime hours in industry and services, and stock prices. M1B money supply growth, the index of producers' inventory and building permits had negative readings, the council said. The semiconductor industry's book-to-bill ratio stayed unchanged, the council said. The index is a gauge of economic activity three to six months ahead. -By Alex Pevzner, Dow Jones Newswires; 8862-2502-2557; alex.pevzner@dowjones.com (END) Dow Jones Newswires
